Thurs 25th Aug: Vicky and Holly met me after work in Thornbury and we packed up the car from floor to ceiling with food - so that we wouldn't have to eat out too often. We had a chineese and (hid the Alice in Wonderland DVD in a cupboard) and set off for the Lizard on Friday.
Woke up early and drove down to Kuggar Dommas cottage stopping off on the way at Jamaica Inn for our lunch. The scene of a great smuggling story now more like a tourist supermarket - however always a great break for a journey and had our lunches. Holly appeared very worried about the weather - worried about rain and kept asking 'is it going to flood -is it going to rain!'
We arrived at Domas at 5 - a lovely modern new build cottage with very swish fittings and furniture at Kuggar. We were quite tired so after unpacking we walked down to the local beach at Kuggar and back.
On Saturday we drove to Kynance cove a beautiful spot with some lovely cliffs and a hidden part between two cliffs which nearly cut us off. First off - I changed into my swimming costume without wet suit which was very cold despite the beautfil weather although Holly and Vicky went straight in. Eventually I bought a wetsuit from the little shop and cafe although it wasn't the most flattering garment I own!
Afterwards I dropped Holly and Vicky off and drove to the ruin of Ruan Majors medieval church which has been unroofed since 1948. The church is hard to find although the tower still stands high above Goonhilly downs. The church had a very quiet and sad atmosphere with its towers and walls still standing but not maintained.
Sunday: On Sunday walked from the Lizard car park with my new walking boots along the cliff path. We witnessed an air rescue where two climbers had climbed up on to the cliff and couldn't get off. Eventually a helicopter showed up and lifted them off the cliff whilst we were eating our lunch on a rock! We walked a little further and Holly decided to climb up a very steep slope. We walked back to the Lizard seeing those wonderful lighthouses and cliffs and into the small gift hut. It was packed out and I was getting just a bit irritable however Holly enjoyed buying up all the bits and peices in there including a pink chrystal stone. Drove back to the cottage and then on to Poldhu Cove near Mullion where there was a scare crow competition going on. Had a good swim at Poldhu.
Monday: Poltreath Beach - made our way for a very good swim to this lovely beach which has quite a climb down to it. The water was very clear and we smam along the beach to caves at the other end and had a good look around. Spent five hours on the beach and in the evening watched some films - Taken and a film about climbing K2.
Tuesday: Visited St Michaels Mount.Holly worried about the weather again because there were some grey clouds in the sky! We arrived at Marazion midday and had lunch in a hotel which included a pint of prawns! There was quite a bit of banter going on in the hotel and a group of drinkers discussing cathedrals which of course I could help out with! We walked to the Mount but didn't go in however went for a boat ride. On the way back we stopped at Praa sands which was lovely - for a good swim and bought some snorkel equipment before diriving and taking a peek at church cove and Gunwolloe.
Weds: Drive to Grade and Cadgewidth walking down and buying a photo of Kynance cove at night. Also drove up to Grade church which seemed very lonely and slightly unkempt on its own. We were expecting Vickys friends, Angela, Lance and Cyra and their lovely dog scuffles to turn up. However I went for a walk - parking at Cadgewidth I walked along to the Lizard and back looking at Hells frying Pan - a large hole in the cliffs with sea lashing. When I got back I could see the children running around playing hide and seek and met Angela and Vicky and the adorable scuffles who is a terrier cross dog only four months old. We walked down to the beach later in the pitch darkness with Scuffles and I walked down with a huge bag of logs and tinder and set up camp on the beach. The kids were a bit scared by the darkness and the beach but got a small fire going eventually and sat talking and telling jokes and scuffles enjoying himself.
Thurs: On Thursday the children Angela and Suffles went to Poltreath beach near Kynance again. I said goodbye and started the long cliff walk from Kynance to Mullion which turned out to be longer than I thought. Enjoyed the high cliffs and walked past some stone quarries and up some lonely long forgotten track ways before getting to a farm near an airfield. An ederly couple took pity on me and gave me a lift to Mullion. I wanted a pasty from the pasty shop but she had sold the last one - the baker told me with a laugh! Caught the bus back to the lizard after locating another pasty and then walked down to the beach and met the children vicky and Angela and scuffles who had found lots of fish and was nibbling at them. He looked ab it tired. In the evening we had rice e.t.c. and cleared up and I took scuffles out for a late night walk.
Fri: Packed up sadly and drove to Stitians where Angela lives in a small house in the village. The children were playing and arguing in turns - however left there and I felt sad to say goodbye to scuffles who was looking out of the window sadly! We drove on to the Eden Project which was quieter than usual and had a good look around although again a few fights with the children! The resteruant was unusual and slightly annoying with boards instead of plates and paid at the end! We all enjoyed a good walk around the domes before saying goodbye and heading off back to Bristol.
